Gary joined the ITA as Senior Lead, Aboriginal Initiatives in 2007 to fulfill the task of increasing the number of Aboriginal people in apprenticeships in BC. Before joining the ITA, he had two previous careers.  He first received a Commercial Cooking Certificate and worked 15 years as a cook and restaurant manager, then at age 34 changed careers and enrolled at University of Calgary to study social work specializing in Aboriginal child welfare. Gary then served as Deputy Director of Aboriginal Services for the BC Ministry of Children and Family Development from 2004-07.
