Understanding the Industry Training System in BC

The ITA is the Crown agency responsible for managing the trades training and apprenticeship system on behalf of the Government of BC.

The ITA's responsibilities include:
  • setting the standards for each of the trades, in close cooperation with industry;
  • setting policies for the industry training system;
  • purchasing apprenticeship technical training and pre-apprenticeship training from K-12 and post-secondary institutions; and
  • providing services to employers and apprentices through the ITA Customer Service Centre including registrations, tracking of training results, exam coordination, assessments and certifications.

For more information on the ITA click here.

The ITA works collaboratively with a range of training system partners including industry, training providers, labour unions, government and other stakeholders.  Each fulfills a role in supporting or ensuring the success the apprentice:

Employers hire and sponsor the Aboriginal person to become an apprentice.

Sponsors are legal entities or certified tradespeople (or equivalent) that are registered with the ITA and provide the apprentice with the opportunity to learn on the job. The sponsor does not have to be the employer; it can be an Aboriginal agency. For more information on sponsors, click here.

Training Providers deliver apprenticeship technical (in-school) training. A range of public post-secondary institutions and private trainers are designated to offer training for credit towards trades certification in BC. These include Aboriginal training centres like the Squamish Nation Stitsma Trades Centre and the Métis Trades Centre. For a description and list of ITA-designated training providers, click here.

Industry Training Organizations are the mechanism by which the ITA is giving industry responsibility for providing leadership and input to industry training in a specific sector.
