Apprenticeship Changes to the Automotive Service Technician Program
Please be advised as of January 1, 2010 the Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship program will be updated to reflect the new Industry Standards for this trade. The Automotive Training Standards Organization has been working in consultation with the automotive industry to review the program standards for the Automotive Service Technician (AST) trade. This review has resulted in revisions to the program content to better reflect employer needs, as well as having the structure continue to align with the Inter-Provincial Red Seal certification. The new model will also introduce a change in the certification process for Automotive Service Technician programs, resulting in credentials after each program which will provide apprentices with the recognition for the training completed and skills acquired at the end of each program.
The new Automotive Service Technician (AST) training program now consists of four distinct progressive programs resulting in credentials - Automotive Service Technician 1, Automotive Service Technician 2, Automotive Service Technician 3, and Automotive Service Technician 4.The Automotive Service Technician trade will remain a Red Seal trade, with the Red Seal endorsement being granted upon successful completion of the Automotive Service Technician 4 program.
The implementation of the new Automotive Service Technician apprenticeship programs starts with transitioning apprentices into the new Automotive Service Technician 1 and the new Automotive Service Technician 2 programs as of January 1, 2010. Automotive Service Technician apprentices who have not completed any technical training will be transitioned into the Automotive Service Technician 1 program and apprentices that have completed level 1 technical training will be transitioned into the Automotive Service Technician 2 apprentice program.
All other apprentices will be transitioned into the new progressive apprenticeship programs at a later date.
