His mom and some enthusiastic mentors helped Jardel Samuels navigate his career path in the skilled trades.

“I am proud of myself for making this career choice at an early age,” he explained. “But it helped that both my teachers and colleagues were so passionate – their enthusiasm really rubbed off on me.”

It was Jardel Samuel’s mother, Camille who originally suggested that he enter the skilled trades. She used to work for the Boys and Girls Club of Canada and helped youth to navigate their careers in the skilled trades. She had always been impressed that British Columbia was so well known for its strong and successful skilled trades sector.

“I had taken a foundation course to become an electrician in my first year of university before moving to Canada in 2008,” Jardel said. “It was mostly theory and I kind of liked it, but I still wasn’t fully convinced.”

Jardel spoke to several electricians and they told him you can learn on the job and ultimately take that knowledge and eventually run your own business. The options for that type of continued learning, growth, and freedom intrigued him so he moved forward with his decision to become an electrician.

“I am proud of myself for making this career choice at an early age,” he explained. “But it helped that both my teachers and colleagues were so passionate – their enthusiasm really rubbed off on me.”

Jardel likes the fact that his job presents a different set of challenges to work through every day and that he now has a set path to follow. He recently completed his work experience and plans to continue working towards his Red Seal certification.
