Meet Your Advisor: Kyle Kozak

Kyle Kozak, one of our new Apprenticeship Advisors, says if you’ve always wanted to work with your hands and be involved in building something that's used every day, now is the chance.

Apprenticeship Advisors provide regional support to apprentices and employer sponsors. They help build knowledge and awareness of the B.C. apprenticeship system and provide guidance to apprentices and sponsors on processes and policies related to the apprenticeship journey and challenger pathway.

Here's a Q&A with Kyle Kozak, Apprenticeship Advisor for Burnaby and New Westminster.

What is your trades background/experience?

I’m a Red Seal carpenter who worked primarily in residential and commercial construction. I’ve worked hands-on as a carpenter, site supervisor, and project coordinator. I enjoy teaching carpentry and spent the last few years teaching an entry-level woman in trades training program and supported many other individuals find employment in the trades.

How long have you been with ITA?

Two months.

What do you enjoy most about working at ITA?

I’m looking forward to supporting the industry in its transition to equity hiring and respectful work spaces. I want to support apprentices in getting the same opportunities I had growing up.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I spend most of my time outside hiking the local mountains. I have a building and woodworking habit so have also spent my spare time constructing tiny homes made from shipping containers or building things like tables and shelves.

What would you like people to know about the trades?

There is a lot of opportunity, and the industry is ripe for innovation. If you’ve always wanted to work with your hands and be involved in building something useful that is used every day, now is the chance.

What advice would you give to people interested in becoming an apprentice?

Stick with it, and don’t let a bad experience leave a bad taste in your mouth. Good employers treat their employees right, so don’t put up with anything less than that. Take responsibility for your career and there’s no telling where it can take you.
